Hello,

I am looking to make /buy a NAS system with 3-4 drives for start and eventually going up to 8 .

I would like to know form people that are using NAS drives which is the best brand/models.

I am interested in the 4 TB per drive and if the extra money for the pro version of the HDD has ever come in handy.

P.S

I live in Cyprus ( in Europe) witch may not be eligible for the free shipping and extra goodies as it is an island.

Thanks in advance

Personally I always use NAS drives and WD and Seagate are essentially equally good options, WD Red or Seagate Ironwolf I think are the cheapest NAS rated and designed HDDs.

Main difference with NAS disks is the firmware is optimized for NAS usage (TLER) and have vibration compensation in them which is important when you have 8 close together in a case without any vibration dampening screws.

What about the pro version of the drives? Also do you prefer Sylology, QNaps or DIY?

Not required for smaller setups and generally not worth the extra cost for home usage even if you get to the higher disk count where it starts to matter. The WD Red Pro and Seagate Ironwolf Pro are more for larger systems that can take 24 disks in them and will actually have 24 disks installed.

That depends, for me at home I build myself but that is down to my requirements and what I use the storage server for.

QNAP make excellent NASs and I've used them a lot and recommend them over any other brand, they cost more than DIY but you are getting more than just parts which is where the cost difference actually comes from.

If you're happy to build something yourself and install something like FreeNAS and don't mind the system being a fair amount larger in size than a QNAP NAS it's the best cost option with very good long term flexibility.

I use 8 WD RE4 in my server, they are now branded als WD gold.

But for a NAS i would recommend WD Red,

the Red Pro and Gold are spinning somehow faster or longer but i don't know what exacly, maybe they ramp up faster or stay longer on full speed when idle. ( does anyone knows what exacly they are doing different? )
