OBS triggers Kernel Panic on Linux Mint

hi guys,

i have linux mint installed on a thinkpad X220. OBS was working on it until today.

but now when i want to start OBS the screen freezes as soon as i click on the OBS icon in the start menu.

the laptop does not respond to keyboard input, the mouse cursor is frozen on the spot and the caps lock light starts blinking - a google search told me that this indicates a kernel panic.

i was installing some "low level" updates the other day - the usual application updates for firefox, thunderbird and whatnot but nothing serious like drivers or kernel updates.

other than that the laptop seems to work just fine, as usual, so i wonder what causes OBS to trigger a kernel panic and if anybody else has had this issue recently.
