Hi, I was wondering if there was a POST card that fits into a PCIe slot. All of the ones I see fit either into a normal PCI slot or a laptop PCIe slot. I have a motherboard that only has PCIe slots, so is there a POST card tester out there that works for PCIe rather than PCI?

I saw a couple on newegg that looked about as shady as a hooded dude in a trench coat leaning out from a back alley.

Unfortunately the only one I found that looks legit and will test PCIe for a standard board is crazy expensive:

Is this one of the shady ones you found? I found it just now.

Is it possible to find a pci to pcie adapter/converter of some sort? I was thinking of something like this https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA86V3DX0502&cm_re=pci_to_pcie_converter-_-9SIA86V3DX0502-_-Product

laptop PCIe slot

They make inexpensive adapters to go from desktop PCIe to laptop PCIe, perhaps the laptop one could go in an adapter

my initial question would be why you need one.

not trying to get off topic here, but i get the feel you're spending money on something you think you need, but the solution is most likely much more within reach.

  • 2 weeks later...

Hi, so my computer recently broke, so I decided to get a post card to get an error code. The post card gave me no code, but instead a few LEDs were off on the 8 LEDs.  What is the error?

Update: The lights that are not on are the -12V one and the Frame one. What does this mean?

I have no idea what the LEDs on the post card means, and the instruction manual that came with my post card is near unreadable. Can someone please tell me what the problem with my PC is based on the LEDs?

Note: There is no error code. All of the lights are either on or off, no flickering.

2nd Note: I had to use a PCIe to PCI adapter to get the POST card to work. It did not work without the adapter (obviously).

Uhhh.. That card plainly says ISA bus on the bottom.

The ISA Bus is for old IBM Compatibles, probably stopping after the 386/486 era.  That's mid-late 90's guy.  You're about 20 years off.

Source - I have 2 different POST cards in my XT and AT clones.

I'll go further to say that it should NOT work with any single machine newer than 1998 or so.  How the hell you even got the LED's to light up using an ISA card in a PCI to PCIe adapter is amazing to me! :P

If that card has both PCI and ISA edge connectors, then you can ignore the stuff about ISA, but I doubt even a PCI POST card would work through an adapter.

One side of it is ISA, another side is PCI. Here is a link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B008BZBKXC/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1514050274&sr=8-1-spons&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=post+card+tester&psc=1

Any chance you know what all of the LEDs mean?

The left bank (-12, 12, 5, 3.3) are just your PSU voltages.  -12 is not available on the PCI-e slot, so that LED wouldn't light.

The right bank:

CLK is the CPU base clock. If it's lit, the CPU is getting it's input clock.

RDY is the READY signal, showing the CPU is ready for instructions.

FRAME is the PCI Frame signal, usually OFF.  (Seeing this one should have clued me in on the PCI edge, but I missed it)

RST is the Reset Signal, should only be lit for a moment when starting, or after pressing your Reset button

The two 8 segment displays will give you a HEX code.  What each code means is different for each motherboard / chipset.

So if my reset button is lit up, then the problem would lie with my mobo constantly resetting over and over again or something like that?

Hey, I was just wondering if there are any PCIe POST cards anywhere. My PC has a no POST issue, and I have tried most of all the troubleshooting I could,

My motherboard is the MSI X99A SLI Plus and it has no PCI slots. If there are no PCIe POST cards, what can I do?
