  1. 1. Stay or Nay

    • Stay with B-150 and get an i7.
      2
    • Get a new motherboard noob.

So, here's the thing. I built this PC last year. Its outfitted with an i3 6100, alongside a GTX 1060 6GB Mini. I'm happy with the 1060, but I'm not happy about the CPU. I know, some would argue that I should have went for an i5, but there were no stocks and the only other option was the overpriced i7, so I went for the i3. I want to upgrade my CPU, but I'm torn between sticking with my motherboard (I have a MSI B150 Bazooka motherboard that supports kabylake) and just change the CPU (maybe like an i7 7700? I'm skeptical about the VRM in the motherboard, need opinions about that) or change the motherboard and get new features (M.2 and faster DDR4, I'm currently limited to 2133mhz).

For Intel's side, the i5 8400 looks clean, 6c 6t although no overclocking, but unfortunately no motherboard to go with it (atleast a worth motherboard). I'm still waiting for Intel to release the B360 chipsets then I'm settled.

As for AMD, I'm liking the look of the R5 1600, 6c 12t WITH OVERCLOCKING, and a paired B350 motherboard. The problem is, I'm also waiting for another motherboard to be released, the Asus B350-I.

I know this is subjective but I want to go for an ITX build. My reasoning behind this is that I don't need multi-GPU or more PCI slots in that matter, nor do I need more sata ports (I want M.2) or even RAM slots, plus the form factor looks cute.

Thanks.

7600/7700 Will be more than enough for the next few years...no need to buy a new z370 board

I really want to recommend splurging on a Coffee Lake, they have so many more cores.  I don't think that makes much real-world difference though.

NOTE: This is a comparison between the 7700K and the 8700 (non-k)

tru dat

the older i7s are too expensive so i wouldn't bother with them, wait a month or two and get a H310 board and i5 8400 or see what zen+ has to offer.

I'm actually leaning into this more. Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah on gaming probably, but I also do light video editing workloads generally for school projects.

Anyhoo thanks for all the replies ^_^
