CRT

oofmaster64

Ok so, I have this iMac g3 that obviously has a crt like the rest do. I see a suction cup or something like that with a wire coming out of it. I've done some research on this and it is quite dangerous but my dad says if I remove the suction cup you cant use the crt again, Is this true?

No, you can remove it for long periods, as long as you tape over the hole afterwards so nothing gets in.

However, there can be some seriously deadly high voltage behind there, you need to ground it out first.

Take a screwdriver, attach an alligator clip / wrap bare wire around the shank, attatch the other end to a solid ground point.  Slide the screwdriver under the rubber until it touches the metal retention clip inside.  You may hear a pop or a click from the discharge.

There are several videos about safely discharging a CRT Flyback.  I suggest you watch them instead of trying it just after reading my reply.  Such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XFmKqZji_XM

If you do this wrong, you can very well die, so pay close attention and do it right.
