Network editing system? need help/advise

Ok so i have no idea what its called but i want to use my pc to edit pictures and movies but store my programs and data on an external hard drive preferable in another system.

Reason is i just finished building my gaming/editing system and have no room for hdd's except some holes i mounted to some plexi. Now they get pretty warm and i dont care too much for that.

I was thinking of building a i3 system and stacking it with HDD's to be used as a backup for all my systems in the house and a place to run my hdd's off of. and using a win 8 64b

Anyway let me know if this is passable.

Sure, I do this myself. I have a passive i7 server used for my media stuff and I have everything in my house linked to it. (streaming/sending files) Make sure you get a beefy router, though.

I'm not sure. How much data do you think you will be passing over the network? Are you going to be using wireless, wired, or both?

Wired, and for vids like maybe a gig when i edit, maybe 2 gigs when editing photos

I really recommend getting a gigabit router or a gigabit switch at least to connect the 2 pc's together, it will improve the workflow a lot.
