Hey folks,

At the moment I have this memory kit in my PC... CMD8GX3M2A1600C8

They don't make them anymore and I was wondering if I could add another 8gb kit to my system using the same 1600mhz speed but with different timings? Perhaps some corsair vengeance stuff or something?

Any help appreciated.

Both sticks should run at the lower timings of the two sticks (if they they are compatible) else you may need to manually specify their timings in the BIOS. I don't think its worth the trouble though, see if you can find a different set sharing the exact same timings.

Were you upgrading to (1x8gb, 1x4gb) 12GB or (2x8gb, 2x4gb) 24GB?

I currently have 2x 4gb sticks of that memory... looking to add another 8gb... So 4x 4gb sticks total. Current stuff has 8-8-8-24 timings at 1600mhz

Oh you're good to go then. Just make sure the RAM is put into the matched slots, and the memory controller should take care of the rest. If it can't run them in quad channel together then it will run each matched pair in dual instead.

I'm guessing I should still match the 1600mhz speed with the new ram and the controller will take care of the timings difference?

Thanks for the help!

I'd personally match the timings to run in quad channel, but yep that'll work fine.

Edit: Another thing - make sure the voltages are the same ;)

Excellent. Thanks again!

Just doing some minor upgrades to get me through until closer to Star Citizens (eventual) release. Then I'll be building from scratch again. If I can squeeze another 1 or 2 years out of this old workhorse I'll be happy.
