Dead 7870 card?

So I had this spare gpu for quite some time now and it was working perfectly until I replaced it a couple of years ago. Now I have some pc parts scrambled together I thought I'd use it for a little gaming pc and put it together with 8GB DDR3 and an i5 2400 and a VS650 power supply.

Now whenever I install Windows (7 and 10) they both get a black screen whenever I install ANY driver (16.x AND 17.11.1/new 17.12.1 Adrenalin edition). After installation it shows as basic microsoft display adapter in device manager and it works fine, up until any driver is installed.

 

Could this gpu be literally dead from being in a drawer?

I doubt it, just sitting there doesn't kill GPUs

Are you sure it is a 7870?

 

Any card below a 7000 series GCN does NOT have support for the newer suite of drivers.

The best you get is an older, beta version, of Crimson that isn't guaranteed to work.

Pretty sure, as it also states so on the back of the card with 2 stickers

Just making sure.

 

In my line of work, I have gotten into the habit of asking the obvious questions.

 

Get burned enough times not doing so, it's habitual

 

Try installing the drivers straight from the Manufacturer's website, instead of the straight AMD ones.
