I've heard that using risers that share the 12v from the MOBO and molex can fry/short the card.

Any more experienced people have any insight into this?

i have not had any problem using the risers but i don't worry about that as most of the power now a days comes from the 8/6 pin

When you use 4+ cards you have to use risers.

This becomes a concern when running more than 4 GPU's. Even though the gpu's are powered by 6/8 pin connectors, they do draw power directly from the motherboard. Occasionally this will lead to overloading and killing your motherboard.

By using a powered riser cable, there is no power draw from the motherboard protecting it a little better.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Users cannot, and will not securely manage key material. Most users can't and the ones that can, wont.

Ask me about Bitcoin, Litecoin, Crypto-Currencies, and/or Mining them.
