DDR3L in a MacBook?

Go to solution Solved by Guest,

A) The early and late 2011 models use DDR3, not DDR3L. Later retinal models use DDR3L - which is also soldered so I am unsure why they are using DDR3L. Get SODIMM DDR3 Modules ranging from 1066 - 1600 MHz work fine. 1866MHz modules have also been reported to work, but hardly anyone uses them, so I would take it with a grain of sand.

B) Yes, however I reccommend running the same amound of memory in both slots as this allows Dual Channel operation - a nice thing due to integrated graphics switching on the 15" models.

Hey there

Im currently upgrading a MacBook Pro Early 2011.

On http://www.digitec.ch they have this Mac Ram: https://www.digitec.ch/de/s1/product/corsair-mac-memory-cmsa8gx3m1a1600c11-1x-8gb-ddr3l-ram-unbuffered-modellspezifischer-arbeitsspeicher-374057

The thing that confuses me is that it is "DDR3L" ram, and not "DDR3" Ram.

On google they say that this RAM works at a lower voltage than normal DDR3 RAM.

So my question is if

A: it is compatible with the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro and

B: Can i use it in combination with one if the preinstalled 2GB RAM (So that i have 10GB in total).

(And yes i know that if i combine a 1600 with a 1333 the faster one will only run at 1333, but the main question is if it even works in combo)

Thanks for your answer!

Just get it from Crucial or OWC, you can put in your model and it filters it down to the RAM that works in your computer. My 2012 MacBook Pro 13" is running 16GB Crucial RAM and a 525GB MX300 SSD with no problems, been about a year or so since we swapped in the parts IIRC, maybe longer tho.

We all know what’s stored in my memory...

And DDR3 & DDR3L are two different things, and are not compatible with each other. Crucial’s tool will help a lot.

Since I am to lazy to put something interesting here, I will put everything, but slightly abbreviated. Here is everything:

No I mean im unsure why the german website uses DDR3L when it would not work. Macbooks are especially picky. Definitely an unconfirmed.
