Motherboard selection

Hey guys, lately i've been having doubts about the motherboard selection for my custom build. Before i get to my questions, i'd like to show you my current specs for my planned build.

 

CPU: i7-8700k

GPU: Asus Strix Gtx 1080ti OC edition

PSU: Corsair HX850i

RAM: 32GB DDR4 Corsair Vengeance RGB 3200Mhz

Case: Corsair Crystal 570x

CPU cooler: NZXT kraken x52

HDD: 4TB Seagate Barracuda

SSD: 500gb M.2 NVME SSD + 500gb 850 evo samsung

 

The motherboard I was thinking about purchasing was the ASUS ROG MAXIMUS X FORMULA. The other two contenders are the CODE and the APEX from the same line of motherboards.

Im planning on overclocking my CPU to 5.0Ghz. 

For overclocking capabilities, i've heard the APEX to be the top of the line, but do I really need it to achieve a 5.0Ghz overclock on the 8700k?

Secondly, I've heard that the main difference between the CODE and the FORMULA is that the FORMULA is directed towards people doing custom water loops. I've had a preference for the FORMULA due to mainly aesthetics, as I am not using a custom water cooling loop. What I have not been able to find however was is there a downside for me to take the FORMULA over the CODE if I am not going to take advantage of the watercooling benefit, apart from the little financial gap?

My big question here is, what do you guys recommend and why between these choices, or any choices that you think might be better?

Also to add, friends have recommended me to get the ASUS MAXIMUS X HERO (WIFI-AC), especially because it is indeed currently available, unlike the other boards i've listed.
