Hello! I'm currently on the fence about upgrading my current PC. I would like some opinions on if I should upgrade, and if I do upgrade, an opinion on which parts I should go with.

These are my current PC specs:

  • Intel Core i7 4790K
  • Corsair H100i V2 Extreme
  • MSI Gaming 5 Motherboard
  • Asus Strix GTX 1070 OC Edition
  • 24GB of Patriot Xtreme DDR3 1600MHz Ram
  • Samsung 850EVO 500GB
  • WD Black 2TB
  • Corsair 750D
  • Corsair AX760I

From this list of components, I would most likely keep the Corsair H100I (If it's still compatible I haven't looked into it), The Strix 1070 (If anything I'll wait for Volta), The Samsung 850 EVO, The Corsair AX760I,  and the Corsair 750D.

These are the upgrades that will be made when I do buy the system. 32GB of 2600+ DDR4 Memory, 500GB M.2 Samsung 960EVO, and an additional 1TB Samsung 850 Evo.

When it comes to upgrading I don't really have a set budget so I'm pretty flexible when it comes to getting parts. I'm conflicted when it comes to what generation of CPU to get. It's between the 7700K, the 8700K, and waiting for the 9th generation of CPU's to be released. Other than the actual CPU when it comes to motherboards I'm pretty lost when it comes to Z370. If I were to go with 8th gen CPU the motherboard has me at somewhat of a standstill. I looked into a GTX Maximus Hero X but I'm not sure if the extra money being spent on the motherboard will have enough of an impact to justify its price over other motherboards.

Sorry if this post seems all over the place any opinions would be appreciated.

When it comes to components I need an opinion on the only thing that I'm not 100% sure on is which motherboard to get for a Z370 based system build. I was looking into the ROG Maximus X Hero but I'm not sure if I want to spend that kind of money on a mobo.

Seeing as even the 8700K is only 27% faster than you 4790K:

I wouldnt upgrade your setup yet IMO.  My rule of thumb is upgrade to a similar pricepoint as the PC you got when it was new (there are exceptions) and only when the part your upgrading is at least 40+% faster.

For example.  my last rig was an FX 8350 (OC'd in such a way it was bascially a 9590) with an R9 290x.  a 1070 is roughly 45% faster than my 290x.  and my i7 is 45% faster than the 9590.   I paid $1400 for my AMD system back when that was all the new shiney thing to have.  and about $1400 (its more now, ive gotten more RAM and better drives of the last year) for my upgrade, which was a total platform change, so new everything except drives.

Thanks for the opinion. I've been edging towards upgrading for a while as I want to make the switch to DDR4. Depending on any other advice I get I may just upgrade what I can right now (Such as the additional drives), and wait until some new tech comes out to upgrade the heart of my system.

You don't need to upgrade anything really, unless you want more cores with Ryzen or Threadripper

What's your display set up?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Pretty simple. I currently use 2 Asus VG248QE 144Hz monitors. I mostly play competitive games so I am much more focused on performance over looks hence why I haven't gone for 1440 or 4k displays.

If I was you I would wait for 9th gen intel based processors as they will be going through a die shrink hopefully giving a fairly substantial increase in performance and unless you want to play at 4k there is no point upgrading from a 1070 as its an amazing card. So what i think you should do and also what I am going to be doing myself is getting the i7-9700k when it is released and whatever XX80 card that is released when nvidia releases volta. Your h100i will continue being great, then motherboard and ram are up to you. You can probably keep your powersupply and case you already have and yeah m.2 drives are great, no cables to manage and crazy fast.

System Specs

CPU: I7-5820k   MOBO:Asus X99 strix   RAM: 32gb corsair Dominator Platinum 2666mhz   GPU: Gigabyte G1 Gaming 980TI  PSU: Corsair RM1000i

Thanks for the opinion I agree I'll probably go down the same path after seeing what everyone has had to say. Completely forgot about the power supply but it's a Corsair AX760I so I should be fine with that.

Then ya, there's not much reason to change anything, just save your money for Ryzen 2 or Next gen multi-die GPUs.

you could try a 240hz display, but really it's not needed

Maybe just get a 2TB Firecuda drive unless you really need the speed from the SSDs, it has an SSD onboard for caching

Yea I'll have a decent amount of storage in the 500GB M.2 Boot drive + the 1.5TB of SSD storage. Other than that I'm planning on making a home server for storage and other utilities so I'm trying to stay away from having a HDD in my main system when I do the upgrade. Thanks for your opinion!
