Hey guys,

I am building a new PC from scratch and here is what I have so far:

Motherboard: MSI B350 TOMAHAWK Arctic
CPU: Ryzen 7 1700

Ram: HyperX 16GB Fury DDR4 2400MHz CL15 KIT

SSD: Samsung 250GB 960 EVO M.2 PCIe 2280

PSU: SilentStorm Icewind 550W (80 plus Bronze)

Coolers: ARCTIC COOLING Liquid Freezer 360 (6 120mm fans) + 3 more 120mm in case

Now my biggest worry is the PSU, I have chosen the 550W due to the recommended results (496W) given to me if i had a 1080ti in the system: https://outervision.com/b/fyG6uc

~I had to use Thermaltake Water 3.0 Riing RGB 360 for the calculation since they haven't my cooler as an option.

However, after doing some digging on forums, everyone is saying that a 700w+ psu is needed for such a system.

I have not yet bought a GPU and my questions are these:

1. Could I run this system (no overclock - base settings) with a 1080ti?

2. Should I use even get a 1080ti or wait for Volta to come out, maybe it will be more efficient / lower tdp for arround the same price?

3. If it is unsafe, what is the next best card option for this system?

Just a couple of additional notes:

- I have an old 760 OC to use until I find a solution so the system will not be collecting dust in the meantime.

- It would be too much of a drag to change the PSU, so please give me some honest feedback in other directions!

Thanks in advance

I would not go as low as 550 with a 1080ti, but 700w is on the topside

Go for 650w, that is the absolute sweetspot in my opinion

Your system will be pulling around 500W from the wall, so I would go with 650W PSU.

Something like RM650i would work great.
