Hey guys I plan on upgrading my pc by adding these. My budget is 1300 CAD(taxes included .. ONT taxes are 13%).  This is pretty under the budget but it would be nice to not use the whole budget.

Im reusing my old psu Corsair HX650W. old ram ddr3 1600 (not sure if should get ddr4s as well) 256 840pro SSD and a 1TB WD green HDD.

I know the i5-8400 or any 8th gen CPU's doesn't look too hot these days due to lack of mobos, but I am planning on getting 8700 later down the road.

I will be mainly using it for gaming, mostly MMOs at 1080p/60fps resolution ( using a 24" monitor)

Now/ I'm wondering if i can do better or would this be good enough for its price.

You will need DDR4 memory for anything higher than Skylake(6th Gen).

Looks like a good build!

You can't and should not reuse your RAM

Would not make any sense to get an 8400 now and an 8700 later. If you need the multi-threading performance go for Ryzen

Upgrade the motherboard if your budget is higher, maybe get 16gbs of RAM instead, if not you'll need to put a fan over the VRM if you OC on the Pro 4.

do not pay that much for a 1060 man.

I meant the 8700K... also is this 1060 not really worth it? I'll be adding 16gb ddr4 then I guess

What are you using your PC for exactly? Just gaming? 144hz gaming?

I wouldn't say it's worth it because you'd be paying money to just unlock hyperthreading, not get a real upgrade. Intel may also soon launch a Z390 chipset to support 8 core Coffee Lake chips.

Not 100% on normal pricing in canada but that just seems high, and it looks like you could get an 8GB 580 for the same price

What's your current monitor and are you upgrading it soon? As the AMD GPUs will save you money with free-sync, if you can reuse your current case for now it looks like you could get 16gbs of RAM and an 8GB 580.

My end goal is 144hz gaming yea. I'm just short on $$ for now. I need a new case, my old case is really beat lol. I will add 16gbs DDR4 as well seeing as my old ram wont be compatible at all. I'm looking to get a new monitor early next year.

For the average AAA game let's say, Ryzen is going to get about 100fps, Coffee Lake(i5 8400+) is going to get about 120fps, and Coffee Lake at 5ghz is going to be 130+fps

So depends if you think it's worth it or not and if you'll notice the difference, I would stick to AM4, but that's just me.

The G-sync 1080p 144hz TN display is $420, so ya get an AMD GPU and Free-sync at either $250 or $300, the $300 Pixio display preferably as it's a VA panel which is going to be better than TN for daily use. The Pixio display is a korean monitor though.

Reviews for it are better on the US Newegg/Canada

yea I'm considering the 1600 now after reading a few other threads. Thanks for the help btw!

It's basically taken from the PC gamer review with a 1080ti, at your current tier of GPU they'll be pretty much identical.

Video shows CPU scaling with Ryzen.
