Alright, so should I get a GPU that will be bottle necked before I get a new CPU?

I tend to go harder on cpu since gpu are easier to swap ... youll keep the cpu for 3-5 years if you buy the best out there .... gpu not so much

Im the kind of person who buys high end cpu (i do vm and thing like that too) and pair it with end high gpu but not the greatest... as of right now ... i would go r7 1700 or 8700 (non K) which are in my opinion the best bang for the buck in term of 6/12-8/16 cpu... for gpu I rock a 1070, it handles 1440p or 1080 at 100fps + depends on your favorite rez/fps.

Yeah, I agree there, Im trying to tell him to buy a Ryzen or Intel CPU upgrade first and then his GPU because Volta might start being announced by then

If he still doesn't have a GPU, I think going with the 1080 first is a good option. As long as he still has plans to upgrade his CPU-related hardware ASAP

if hes on the budget, ryzen 5 1600 is incredible for the money.. am4 board arent that expensive... it htis 3.7 our of the box w/o voltage adjustement on stock cooler with reasonable temp !

Also, I get used gpu since they are waaaayyyy cheaper than new... it never failed me once !

Where would you recommend getting it used from? Cheyenne isn't the greatest place for hardware hunting

No, hes got a GPU

oh. then you should convince him to go the CPU route first ahahaha just tell him upgrading the GPU first won't give him as much as a performance boost vs upgrading his CPU first. good god AM3 is so old.

Well hes upgrading his GPU first. This kid is way to far into the instant gratification scene. He does not believe me when I say an FX-4300 will bottleneck a 1080

I would stick maximum to 1070 or RX Vega 56 with AM3 if it is a FX 8 core but if it is a 6 core or quad tell him to buy a Ryzen! :3
