Ehhhh....hard to say! You'd have to try them.

The thing is, the M50x has a bad reputation on these forums, but the AKG K52 is more of an entry-level headphone. But that doesn't say much.

Whats causing the bad rep on the m50x's?

Bloated bass, harsh treble.....not worth the asking price of 150USD, but if you can get it for less than 100USD, sure.....why not? BTW, going from the the K52 to the M50X isn't an upgrade at all in my opinion. I'd suggest you pony up more cash and look for a better pair of cans.....perhaps the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro (closed back) or DT990 Pro/Premium (open back), consider them only IF you like sparkly treble, they do have pretty decent tight bass when compared to the M50X. Or, since already have a pair of closed back in the K52, why not go open back and get in on the MD HD6XX drop (ETA for delivery is March 2018). I own a good number of closed and open back cans, the HD6XX puts up a show showing when compared to even some of my higher end cans.

I don't know if you'd read my edited post, bear in mind the Beyerdynamic cans do have that Beyerdynamic house sound, nice tight bass with sparkly highs (some may not like the 'hot' treble, just FYI). The HD6XX tops everything else under the 200USD price range, I'd suggest you look into that as well.

Currently looking at DT 770's just wondering for music production what would be better the 80 OHM or 250

Music production? Then consider the DT880 instead, it has a more neutral sound compared to the DT770/DT990. The DT880 is a semi-open (or is it semi-closed? I guess it depends on whether you're a 'glass half empty or glass half full' kinda guy ;) ) and is a cheaper alternative to those who can't afford (or not willing to pay for) the HD800 (from what I've gathered anyway).

One question with the 880 would the 600 OHM run with onboard motherboard audio or would I need a soundcard

The DT880 Pro is 250 Ohm, I don't recall seeing a 600 Ohm version. I do have the DT990 Premium, and it is 600 Ohm version. Anyway, don't just look at the impedance only, it plays a small part, look at the sensitivity as well, the higher the number, the easier it is to drive. You can try driving any can with your mobo audio, it's a question whether it gets loud enough for you.

BTW, do wait for more opinions from the audio big heads around here, I'm pretty new at this so take what I'd said with a pinch...

My bad, there is a DT880 Premium version which is 600 Ohm, the DT880 Pro is the one with like in the link below

https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-DT-880-PRO-250-Reference-Monitor-Headphones/dp/B001B1QENY

There is a DT880 Premium 600 Ohm also

https://www.amazon.com/Beyerdynamic-880-Premium-HiFi-headphones/dp/B0024NK35S/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1511405215&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=dt+880+premium

I suppose it's cheaper because of the 600 Ohm Impedance, harder to drive (vs 250 Ohm version and lower) hence it isn't as popular.

Most likely going to try to go for the 600 OHM on friday I should be able to drive it
