Pci Lan extender

Hi im planning on building a server that i will be placing close to my workstation. Instead of running another ethernet cable all the way from my switch to the same location are there any pci/-e card that works as an extender, so i can use my current cable and simply use a shorter one from the server to my computer. 

 

and if there is, will the server have to be turned on to be able to use the internet on my computer, if so i guess i'll rather go with a small switch

It would require the PSU on, which would require the system on really. 

 

With how cheap 4/5 port switches are, you may as well just get a switch so it always works.

yeah my vote is get a small switch that sits locally where both pc's are
