New pc build

Sebbe218

So I recently posted about my concern about upgrading my computer or starting a new build. It came down to starting a new rig. I'm just wondering if you guys have any tips about if I should change anything or so..

Here is my planned rig:

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k 4,0ghz

GPU: MSI Gaming X - GTX 1060 6gb

Motherboard: Asus rog maximus hero VIII

SSD: Samsung 850Evo 250GB

HDD: WD 7200rpm 1TB

RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8gb

PSU: EVGA supernova g2 750W

CPU Cooler: Corsair hydro H100i v2

Case: Dunno yet, give tips :P

Thanks!

What will you do with the PC?

Don't get the 6700K. Get a Coffee Lake I5 or Ryzen, depending on your use case.

What speed is the RAM at?

750W is way overkill. 450W is plenty.

Don't get a 240mm AiO. Either get a decent air cooler, or a 280mm AiO.

Some decent cases are the Enthoo Pro M, Meshify C, RL06, 400C and 600C

:)

1. PC will be used mostly for gaming, schoolwork, social medias and other stuff

2. Why not the 6700k? Alright, how about i7 7700k? It's good right?

3. RAM speed is 2400mhz

4. PSU - Altough im planning to perhaps adding another GPU in the future

5. Why not? - The hydro 100i is a good AiO right?

6. Cool I'll check them out ! :)

Get Ryzen 5 1600, B-Die memory and a decent AM4 mobo.

7700K is bad nowadays (it is same as 6700K)

Don't buy Apple M1 computers with 8GB of RAM

Okay, how bout the i7 8770k and a z370 motherboard?

How would that compare to a Ryzen 5?

For gaming, you'll want to prioritise the GPU more. Change the CPU to an 8400 or Ryzen 1600, and change the GPU to the GTX 1070 or 1070 Ti, assuming you'll play at 1440p.

The Coffee Lake I5s perform pretty much as well as the 6700K/7700K in games, cost less and have a better upgrade path.

You'll want faster RAM. Check the prices for ≥2800 MHz kits, irrelevant of brand.

The 1060 doesn't support SLI, and multi GPU support is going down. Don't bother.

The H100i performs as well as cheaper air coolers, is noisier and less reliable. A 280mm radiator will have a 35% larger surface area, making them sort of relevant, but with the other issues.

I would ditch the 6700k, and get the i5-8400. it will outperform the 6700k in gaming applications, and being a locked chip you should be fine to use the included cooler, so that will save you some money, plus the chip itself is only $200.

How about this:

CPU: Intel core i5 8600k

GPU: Asus gtx 1070 8gb

RAM: Hyper x predator 2x8gb (3000mhz)

Motherboard: Asus rog strix z370-h Gaming

SSD: Samsung 850 evo 250gb

HDD: WD 1TB

PSU: Evga supernova g2 750w

CPU cooler: Dont know, give tips, I checked out the x62 kraken - is it good?

That sounds quite a bit more expensive than the original build.

How is the pricing of the 8600K for you? In the US, it's $80 more than the 8400. If it is that big of a difference, get the 8400. For gaming, both will perform very similarly. For 1440p gaming, you'll want to consider changing the GPU to the 1070 Ti, but the 1070 is fine, since it costs much less.

The PSU is overkill, and I generally advise against multi-GPU setups. I would get a cheaper, lower wattage unit.

The X62 is a good cooler, but it's really expensive, compared to most others. ~$50 more than for example an H110i/115i. I would rather get an air cooler for ½-⅓ of the price, and spend that money elsewhere. For the 8400, the stock cooler is fine, though.

The CPU difference here in sweden is only about 600kr which would be roughly 60 US dollars!

I'm not willing to go even higher on the GPU I guess the 1070 will do.

What would you recommend as a PSU?

So I should go with the stock intel cooler if I choose the i5 8400?

Yes, I would go with the stock cooler if you get the 8400. For the PSU, the coolermaster v550 is 50-60 bucks right now, is gold rated and fully modular.

I think the 600kr difference should be enough for a 1070 Ti instead. What resolution will you game at? Or you could save the 600kr.

The Seasonic Focus Plus Gold 650W is on sale atm. Cheapest fully modular tier 1 PSU. 829kr.

The stock cooler is fine with the 8400. If you want a cheap cooler for aesthetics, or lower temps, the Pure Rock Slim costs 200kr. But as I said, not needed.

7700K is bad nowadays?? As far as an upgrade path goes, yea, there wont be one for 6700k or the 7700k.  But based on his needs, how is the cpu that most people agreed was the absolute best /fastest for gaming and other uses just 6-10 months ago "bad nowadays". Not trying to be a prick, honestly curious, especially since I just got 1 on Black Fri ($279 along w/ 2 AAA games) Please let me know what you think...
