What is the general opinion about this board? Does it support 7.1 sound? How many fans does it support etc.

It's a good board for the price with a lot of features, you shouldn't worry about fan amount because you can always buy a fanhub. About 7.1 surround IDK, but I suggest either way you get a soundcard, pci or USB, or an amplifier.

No USB Type C which is a deal breaker for me but for other it might not be. I can use a PCIE Thunderbolt Card but it would be nice for it to be native.

You should look for ALC1220 board. Those are the best, MSI and Asus have the best implementations.
