If you're gaming, keep your i5. It's the newest of the three and has the best IPC, and you aren't going to beat it with an i7 920.

So I have a system with an i5 4570 with 16gb of ram and a system with an i7 920 with 12gb of ram. should I overclock the 920 and use that. buy a 6 core xeon and overclock that. or should I just stick with my i5. my gpu is a gtx 980 if that makes any difference.

Your i5 is perfectly fine for 60hz gaming

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

are you sure? the i5 only runs at like 3.2 ghz and I could probaby overclock the i7 to around 4

The i7 is also three generations older than the i5 and 4GHz wouldn't be enough to make up the gap in single core performance.
