Hey everyone! So first thing's first. I have a naturally hot chip, an i5 8600k. Its stuffed into a tiny SFF case: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/YjWD4D.

 

At maximum (100% usage for significant time in Bf1 or something) I'll peak at 83c (at the package, NOT every single core. Each core may reach like 79-81). In the bios, I have the cores set to fire together at 4.6ghz when cpu boost is activated. I also have the voltages locked in at 1.19 vcore as the system got even hotter when I had it all at stock and it would boost to 4.3ghz (stock) and the board auto applied voltages and thought 1.35 volts was a great idea....I figured I could get higher ghz AND get a lower voltage (and therefore temps) this way. 

 

Anyway, thats a little run-down of the system. 

I've been told that these temps at load are OK given my case, overclock, and the Coffee Lake design itself. 

 

HOWEVER, my main concern (unless you believe my temps are NOT OK), is that my temps fluctuate fairly rapidly in HWMonitor when opening programs/doing work on my computer (not gaming). So right now as I type this I am sitting at 36-40c on all cores. However if I open up programs and such, the core temps may bounce to like 45, 50 or 60 even for a brief period of time (maybe a second or two).

 

Is this normal behavior? The last builds that I have done have all been water cooled (since like 2012). I am new to air coolers, especially SFF air coolers.

My 6700K experiences the same thing. The cores are so small nowadays that heat builds up extremely quickly around the built in temperature sensors - those that are built into/on top of the core. so long as your cooling solution is able to kick in for sustained high temperature spikes, you have nothing to worry about.

 

Even though the temperature may be high for a moment, the fact that it's transitory means the heatsink (the IHS and the baseplate of the air cooler or block of a water cooler) is able to dissipate them with no external intervention.

Awesome! This is a totally new type of build for me, so I'm checking out every and all little "quirks" about the system.

I was worried about this as well when I built this system, I upgraded from an i7-920 which had pretty large core sizes compared to today, and didn't experience it to nearly the same extent. I thought it was a fault until I built a few different systems based on Skylake and Kaby Lake - they all experience the same behaviour. I haven't specifically built a Coffee Lake system yet, but it sounds like an extension of the same.

It's more or less the same but just a much hotter chip. I guess that's why they call it "COFFEE Lake" xD

i had the same issue but right after I reinstalled windows and reformat my pc, 

surprisingly my temp went 10 degrees lower at full load and idle.

I disabled all gaming options in anti virus settings,

and quit using any gaming optimization such as GeForce Experience and Razer Cortex.
