I am wondering how long this build will get me and what I should do with it/upgrade next?

Also I just recently made this build so I only have $150 for anything.

I also still need a GPU. Should I save up more money and upgrade later when I have enough to when I can sell the i5 and get a newer i7?

i5 6600k

Asus Z170 Pro Gaming

Crucial Ballistic Sport 2x4gb 2133mhz

If at first you don't succeed...

Call it version 1.0

It's a good system. Save up for a decent gpu.

for $150 since you need a GPU either save up $100 more for a 1060 6gb, or get a new 1050ti or used r9 2/390 or gtx 970. you can get a used 6/7700k as a future upgrade, it performs about the same as a 8600k in gaming.

save up until you can afford GTX 1070 at least

Ok thank you all!

I was thinking of getting a used 970 or a 1060 6gb.

@Bworde15

GTX 1060 6GB would be better.

No way to know how long the system will last. It all depends on your needs.

No. Once you have a gpu, start saving for a new system. In a few years, once you have saved enough, get the latest tech.

don't bother with Z270, if you want coffee lake then go straight to an 8700/k. an i7 6/7700k would perform about the same as an 8600k so I'd skip the coffee lake i5s.

Ok, thank you!

Last thing, could I consistently upgrade a part each time once I get the money?

Example- Get a 1060 6gb, a few months later get a i7 6/7\8 x00k CPU, then a few months later get a z270/370, then a few months later upgrade case/PSU, a few months later get more RAM, a few months later then get a new CPU if i need one.

Could I do that so I don't have a lower system drop 1-2k on a new system then once that gets older get a new system. I feel like that will be a lot of up and down, I feel like one part at a time will be more consistent and not as much money.

To a degree this can be done. It doesn't work out very often. Upgrading gpu is quite common. Changing case or psu is quite doable. But upgrading from an i5 to an i7 same generation is rarely worth the cost. Upgrading from one generation to another often means upgrading the motherboard and sometimes memory. Anytime I've been faced with upgrading a cpu I inevitably end up replacing most of the system. The principal reason being that the then current tech is typically much better and no more expensive.

Best is to save up for a new system. Every time you think about upgrading a component, drop the $ in a savings account instead. In a few years you will have what you need for a new system.

2019 is the time that i would say the golden time to upgrade, because AMD and Intel are gonna be so innovative
