I switched from liquid to air due to noise. I had my fx 8320e clocked at 4.8ghz on a Corsair H55 with a push/pull setup. It was soooo loud under load I couldn't handle it. Granted that's a aggressive overclock, but if my cpu can handle it then why not? I switched to a Noctua NH-15. I achieved the same OC with the same temps with WAY less noise. It was incredible.

I also installed the same AIO you got in a friends computer. I swapped the stock fan for a Noctua one. It got her fx 6300 to 4.5ghz with limited noise from the fan, but I can still hear the pump. It's not a bad cooler when on sale, but I don't think I'll ever go back to liquid.

It's an interesting trade-off, at the very highest end liquid is better than air. I have found it quieter and cooler but only at the very top of AIO and custom loops. However...when you get down into the high end air-coolers and the equivalent AIOs for mid-range CPUs even at high overclocks the air-coolers are going to be just as cool and quieter. They also tend to last longer - although this is a meh kind of difference for the most part in that an AIO can be expected to last 3-5 years and I have never kept the same CPU/cooler for longer than that anyway. Although systems I have put together for relatives have stayed with the same CPU/cooler for longer but they tend to be lower end and not pushed.

AIO's are reliable enough to not worry about but they'll never be as reliable as air cooling.

What are you looking for in your cooler?

What case and ram are you using? Are there any other shops you're looking at? What's your budget?
