Offline nas to pc

So im in the process of gatering parts for my new nas and i wanted to double check my research. So when connecting the nas to the computer via a wired Ethernet cat6e cable would it be

NAS > network card [pci-e] > Ethernet to router > from router to ethernet to computer.

Is that how it supposed to be or are there a bunch of ways to config a wired connection. Im open to questions
