Do I need more cables?

I have 2 r9 290's and a corsair 850 rm that comes with 3 6+2 pin pci-e cables and each card has 8+6 pins. The cables I have have two sets of 6+2 so can I use two 6+2's on one card and use the extension from one of those to power the 6 pin on the second card and the second card would have one 6+2 pin directly from the psu?

nope you'll need to use a 2 molex to 6 pin.

The RM850 has 6 6+2's which means you will be just fine. I'm guessing it's 3x 2 6+2's, so just use one of those for each card.
