Has this just suddenly started happening? Do you have the latest drivers for your GPU and have you ran a memory diagnostic test yet?

Tl;dr

how do I check why windows 10 freezes when I just have 5~ max tabs of YouTube in chrome open?

Long version:

i have no idea why my computer freezes. It straight up, audio stops, mouse won't move, no way for me to do ANYTHING, except power off with power button.

It strangely happens only when watching YouTube videos, or on the desktop. Some odd things that sometimes occcur before freezing are random temporary black screening. As in the screen will go black and back to normal several times (2-8 times within half a second) However it doesn't always do this black screen thing before freezing.

When playing games (on steam like insurgency, arma 3, Fallout 4, Uplay's Rainbow six Siege) Or developing in Unity 3D, articy draft, leadwerks. and Multisim.

Its oddly just when chrome is open or chrome and open office with a word document. Sometimes discord too.

Sometimes its random, other times it seems to occur when right clicked in one window and left clicking in another,

sometimes when pressing escape to leave full screen, sometimes as soon as a video ends

other times (usually) in the middle of a video for no reason. I know it's the middle (25%-75% completion) because when I restore chrome and seek where I was, it's the middle.

Specs:

i5 3450

12 gb ram

gtx 1050 ti

Asus motherboard

750 watt seasonic psu

how do I check what went wrong?

This has been passively occurring for a long time. As in some days it does it all the time, other times it'll go a month or more perfectly stable.

Ill rechech nvidia experience to see if there are any updates.

How ow do I run a memory diagnostic test? If there's a program download, link? And wiki to verify it's not a virus?

What version of Windows are you using?

1607/1703/1709?

I had problems with 1709, where everything felt like it was lagging or stuttering. Reverted back to 1703 and everything is fine again.

Maybe try uh... *Downgrading* and see if thats the same problem. It could be just a Windows 10 problem. Have you tried updating Windows 10 to the latest version? Bug fixes are always popping up in new updates.

I bought windows 10 boxed. If you mean go to a previous update, I don't know how. I would have liked to remain on the original version of windows 10 that came on the USB in the box, but Microsoft is just like "NOPE!" and forces updates whether you like it or not.

I also noticed you said this happens with Chrome only. Try using *Dun dun dunnn* Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge (Which isnt half bad.)

I don't know how to replicate this error.

I've used edge in the past on one of my installs of windows 10, however the new tab layout in chrome is just wayyyy better than anything I've seen.

1703 in settings from the gear icon in the start menu.

In that case I don't think Windows itself is causing that problem since I'm using 1703 on my personal PC + 200 PCs in company I work for ...

Updating the video drivers made the system more stable, though it still freezes.

This is the best method to... hinder freezing.
