Recently I bought the computer I'll list below from my brother (who dumpster dives for parts) for $100. Then took some bad advice from him on buying a graphics card on eBay. Since then I've been doing research on several sites and YouTube trying to educate myself. Well... I'm getting an education alright!!! I found out I pretty much wasted $200!!! See if you agree ---->
________________________________________________________________
DELL Intel core I-7
XPS STUDIO
Model # REG D03M 001
MFG DATE 2010
(2nd generation)
I-7 processor 860
8Gb RAM.

PROCESSOR, I7-860, 2.8, 8MB, LYN, 95W, B1. (QUAD CORE)
1TB HARD DRIVE
OS Windows 10 pro

Video card: Nvidia
GeForce GT730 4GB 5DDR 128 BIT ( The only new part in the whole system I got from eBay)

DELL Service tag D0zhkn1
Express service code:
28357776829
________________________________________________________________
So....NOW WHAT!!?? Do I (A) try to work with this, suggestions needed! or (B) count that $200 as "educational cost" and start over with your help??
I'm leaning towards the (B) choice!!
That said, I'd like to keep the new build under or about $1000 -$1200 including peripherals. (Monitor mostly)
It'd be used only for gaming and casual web browsing video watching.

I already know I made a HUGE MISTAKE on the graphics card.

Looking to play SKYRIM NEED FOR SPEED GTA5 & similar games. But this won't do it obviously

Thanks for the help in advance

Well the video card is modest, but the rest of the system is just fine. If you are not a hardcore gamer, it's a fine build.

What are you trying to accomplish with it?

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

And recycle the hard drive in the pc you bought.

If you wanna save some more money you could get a 1060 6gb instead. An r5 1600+b350 mobo would also save $50 for no loss in performance though 8400 has more gaming potential. I'm not good with peripherals so perhaps someone else could choose those instead.

GT 730 can barely run any modern game at low on 720p.

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.

BTW IM SCRAPING & BUILDING NEW!!

Not a bad idea.

One thing to keep in mind with the latest Intel cpu like the i5-8400, supply is quite limited at the moment.

Sooooo???? U mean I might not be able to get the i5?? And what about my original question?

The i7-860 cpu is not up to GTA 5.

In response to competition, Intel released the 8th gen desktop cpu a bit earlier than originally intended. As a result production is just ramping up and initial availability is tight. I expect supply will start to meet demand in a month or so.

I know, you asked for a response to the original question. I took that to be the OP question should you keep the old system or start afresh.

I don't understand

On the My Custom Build page, there is a tool bar above the list. On the left side of the bar is a field labeled Permalink. The contents are a link to that particular build list.

Roughly in the center of the tool bar is a button "[bb]". Click it to popup a window with a suitably formatted build list that can be copied into a post.

Instead of two 120GB ssd, I would suggest getting a single larger ssd.

If you are purchasing in the US, SeaSonic FOCUS Plus 550 Gold and EVGA SuperNOVA 550 are slightly less expensive but much better psu.

I'm doing a raid on the 2ssd & using a 1Tb mechanical drive as storage.

If it's RAID 0, I would suggest not doing so. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-raid-benchmark,3485-13.html

If it's any other RAID level, unless downtime is extremely expensive, it is not worth the bother. A good regular backup scheme will suffice. Besides, 120GB is on the tight side for a Windows boot & system volume.

The guy helping me put this all together said. "They all say that it's bs. honestly it all lies in the configuration and the motherboard ram combo on top of that raid stripe.ive been doing this for a long time I'd tell you If it was a waste of time"

So I don't know WHAT to believe.

If you check out the much more detailed article I linked you will note that while RAID 0 ssd are very fast in particular types of i/o. Those i/o patterns are less common on the desktop. The patterns cited in the article you linked for instance. How often do you read a 10GB file all at once?

If speed is the goal it is less expensive to use a 4-lane NVMe M.2 drive like the Samsung 960 Evo / Pro.

A 120GB boot & system drive is going to be very tight.
