I think the device also has to support it, which most do not.

They are real, and I actually have a few. Never seen a device that actually uses it though.

HDMI with Ethernet cables are constructed differently, they connect Pin 14 (which was previously reserved) and combine it with the HPD pin to form an additional twisted pair, which is used for Ethernet and ARC.
