Black Screen on Boot

So, i'm trying to see if my previous laptop's motherboard still works for an attempt at a rebuild. (it's just for fun.) When I test it, it doesn't show anything on the lcd screen, and i've tried with an external HDMI monitor but still nothing. What are the troubleshooting steps that I should go through to attempt to diagnose the problem?
