Hey fellow nerds,

It has been years since I've build a computer and have just been "gaming" on a work laptop, I play mostly Grand Strategy (EU4 and the like) And the occasional MMO, no tripple A shooters or the like.

I was playing around with PCpartspicker and wanted a decent "middle of the road" machine with future upgrade potential in mind and have come up with the following:

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel - Core i3-8350K 4.0GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($178.89 @ OutletPC)
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master - Hyper T2 54.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler  ($16.99 @ Amazon)

Any comments on my choice of parts? Any tips?

Depending on the strategy game and its length of an average match, you may want to invest in a more powerful processor so CPU turns go faster.

That's assuming your games can use multiple cores in the first place.

Unless your dead set bellow 900 it's okay but I'd step up to the i5-8400. That one currently wins in price/performance.

And of course beats the i3 as far as I know. Will do so in longevity.

Also, I'd prefere an ASUS Motherboard over MSI but that's not a big deal.

I agree unless he might want to overclock. Also, I completely agree on using an ASUS motherboard.

Get the 8400 instead of the 8350K, unless you will absolutely not benefit from the extra cores (if the game you play only uses 1 core).

If you get the 8400, drop the T2, if you get the 8350K, get a better cooler.

I think there was a $99 Z370 motherboard. Get that one.

Get cheaper RAM. 2400-2666 MHz is fine, and for Intel platforms, it doesn't make much difference.

I have no idea why you would get the WD Blue SSD. Get the SL308 or MX300 instead.

Get a cheaper 1050 Ti. It's a 75W card IIRC, so cooling doesn't really matter.

Get the P300 instead.

Get the CX/M instead of the BQ

:)

Sosig. You know. :D

Also true, but I doubt an overclocked i3 performs better than the i5.

http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i5-8400-vs-Intel-Core-i3-8350K/3939vs3935

It's not much but apparently the i3 is 11% faster in single core but 32% slower in multicore speed. But this is a sinthetic benchmark.

I mean quadcore gaming has always been great so I guess its just really up to OP if he is gonna be using those extra cores.

Yeah, still the step up is finally upon us. And the number of games only using single core is dwindling every day. (maybe a bit overdramatic). ;)

These are actually good advices.

Except the case. But tempered glass on 60$ damn. Still don't like the fronmt, but damn. 60$

Also, why does everyone advice against the BQ?

Thanks. Good advices, as opposed to my usual advices, which are crap? That's what you mean? :P

I can't resist trying to get TG cases to everyone. He could get a less expensive case, but like $10 for a nicer looking case? Which he'll see every day? Worth it, imo.

The BQ isn't bad, per se, It's just that it's rarely available for compelling prices, the CX/M is available for less quite often, and there are often other, better PSUs available for less. Currently, that's the Rosewill Photon for $40 after rebate, and the TX550M for $43 after rebate and with a code

:o I ... I mean...

*panics*

:o *cries*

I also love TG. Sucks a bit that I just changed my case prior to TG become widespread (exactly 2 years ago).

Really considering just changing my case but it's 100+ € just for looks. (Currently using the bequiet silent base 600)

Also I like dead silence for my PC (while not gaming) and currently I have that ^^

The price difference appears to be 13 dollars (at least on the Corsair Vengeance LPX) Is it really that small of a difference that it's worth saving 13 bucks?

Noted, appreciated the feedback!

Apparently the price increased. I guess it sold out, or the price has changed since a few hours ago. I mean, any Z370 board should be fine for an 8350K. Lower end boards tend to have 6 USB ports, and the one you chose is the least expensive that doesn't have one of the USB ports as Type C.

Do you really want an LPX kit? There are 2x 8GB  2400 MHz sticks for $135, or a Ripjaws 3000 MHz kit for $150.

You could get the card from Newegg for $140 after rebate. Or just any 1050 Ti. Just go to the GPU section on PCPP, and set the filter to 1050 Ti.

No problem.

:)

For the 1050Ti, look at Zotac. Both EVGA and Zotac offer prolonged warranty (Zotac 5 years) and evga once had 10 years. But when looking for my 1080 I found that Evga now wants money on top when registering. That bummed me.

Zotac 1050Ti mini is also the cheapest :D
