For storage on my rig I am running two 500GB Samsung 960 EVO M.2 drives in Raid 0 and I also a 1TB 850 EVO SSD.  Tonight I was moving some game files from my M.2 Raid array to my SSD.  It was about 400GBs total.  I happened to have HWInfo64 open monitoring something else when I noticed two M.2 drives temps go red...they were breaking 80c...

They both maxed out at 84c but seemed to hover i the mid/high 70c during the move.  My questions are:

1.  Is this safe?

2.  Is this normal?

3.  What is the difference in the two temperature sensors on the 960 EVOs?

4.  Do the heatsinks EK sells actually work?

Completely safe temperatures.

Looks normal, but I don't know your case's temps.

I believe that temp sensor #1 is the package while #2 is the controller. I don't know if Samsung's manual states which is which.

The label on the 960 EVO has a thin copper sheet that dissipates heat relatively well. If you want to try heatsinks, keep in mind that you'll want to use thermal pads, not adhesive, or pastes that are non-conductive and not prone to thinning with heat cycles.

Thanks for the reply.  I have solid air flow and I was not gaming or stress testing at the time, so case temps were probably ~25c.  One of the drives has a heatsink on it that is incorporated into the motherboard.  It is a pretty solid chunk with a thermal pad pressing against the front of the M.2.  It must not be doing much good considering the temps were almost identical.

Here is what I am talking about...

I wouldn't use those covers since they're usually much to bulky to effectively remove heat from the M.2 almost like insulation.

I would use a heatsink like this one if you're looking for some.

The cover is only on one of them.  I guess it is not doing any harm or good since they are running the same temp.
