Hello!
I was looking around on the internet one day and found a program called "Smart Defrag 5" and knowing that deframentation could be alright I tried it. No problem or anything but just what will the improved by defragmenting your harddrives? Are there any better software for this? Who and why should you do it? Will it do anything good for a gaming pc(with alot of games)?

//Thanks

I think Windows 10 defrags your hard drive anyway so this software is obsolete. Defragging can slightly improve performance on HDDs because it means the drive head doesn't need to move so far for each file or whatever (Things open slightly faster after defragging depending on how fragmented the drive was before). Do not defrag an SSD - SSDs have a limited number of read-write cycles so you would be wearing it out and they can't benefit from the speed increase anyway..

I edit my posts a lot.

If your hdd is just used for music, videos, pictures (ie no programs) you could just copy paste it all onto another drive once in a while.

As the peevious poster said, don't defrag an ssd.  It does nothing except wear it out faster.  Ssds already have a built in software to perform wear leveling.

"defrag tools" are leftovers from a time when operating systems did not do this automatically and every millisecond of load time was critical because horribly slow hard drives was all we had to run these operating systems from.

XP didn't auto defrag but ever since vista it is normal for the OS to do some harddrive housekeeping when the drive is not busy

Im defragmenting my 2 tb drive now and so far it has defragmented almost 100gb. It "trimmed" the C: drive (my ssd), no idea what that is but it happend.

I had my m.2 ssd drive selected aswell for defragmentation but after I read this I directly deselected the drive. So the software didnt detect that ssd for some reason. Id highly recommend the drive booster from the same company aswell! Its way easier to find what driver needs to be updated. (damn it sounds like im promoting it xD)

I used to use both Smart Defrag and Driver Booster but they really are both obsolete now (And have been since at least Windows 7 if not XP as @KenjiUmino said). Windows 10 is likely much better and more reliable than that software at finding drivers, and the best solution is always to check manually anyway if you think you have a driver problem.

If anything, I would now class these two pieces of software as malware/adware because they have no use on modern computers and are there solely to use your computer's resources and advertise this company's software to you.

Im not so sure tho, this thing shows up when running the defragmentation. The red boxes are fragments, black unused, Orange MFT(whatever that is), purple cataloges, green is usually used, blue rarely used, the darker blue is unmoveable and white means "moving".
(OBS! I paused the defragmentation and restarted the pc, thats why only 27gb has been defragmented.)

so you installed something with "booster" in the name? that stuff is right in the same ballpark with "tuneup" "speedup" and anything "-bar"

... and then a few weeks later they come running "why my pc so slow?"

so .. another redundant feature since windows 10 can also do that... it loves to mess with drivers

I had some drivers for USB and such that hasnt been updated which I didnt know where to find? I dont rly know how w10 works and I dont think it will be a hugh difference in performance but still it feels like an easy and handy tool to find drivers.
