I currently Have an XFX R9 290 its getting pretty old but still holds up rather well. I mainly play heavily modded skyrim with a lot of texture mods and feel my 4GB is holding me back and plan on upgrading to 1440p sometime down the road. Ive been looking into a used titan maxwell or a 980 ti unless the custom vega 56 aib cards come out soon just wondering what you guys would recommend as of now seeing as the gpu market is pretty bad rn.

I would wait for volta if you can. as you said the market is bad right now, and Volta should be a pretty large performance jump if you can wait.

I feel like thats the problem with graphics hardware in general its always been "wait till the next BIG thing" and ive been putting off an upgrade for 2 years now from what ive heard the vega 56 AIB cards are supposed to drop this quarter but we all know how that goes.

I mean if you can't wait then sure go vega 56. If it were me however I would just overclock the snot out of the 390 I had and wait till volta.

If you are going to upgrade to 1440p you need atleast a 1080. If you can stick to 1080p and plan on upgrading both your display and graphics card, get the 56 if you can at the retail price. The AIB isn't going to be very different in perfromance from reference models and don't expect them to be on the same price level either. I wouldn't be surprised if they got sold at 1080 prices. I think the 1080 is a better option. Unless you want to go freesync way and hope for a decent RTG gpu with Navi which is even further away from Volta. What refresh rate are you going to get for the 1440p? If its 144Hz, you'll need a 1080Ti. 60 Hz, 1080 should be fine.

That's going to be a long wait. I would rather suggest he get the best he can get now.

Depends a bit on where you're located, at least where I'm at the 1070 is up to 100€ cheaper than the Vega 56 depending on the model, so I'd go with that. If you really wanna max things out at 60 fps 1440p and be future proof for longer you should go with a 1080.

Edit: Just checked on Newegg and the price difference is similar in USD.
