Brix just broke.

Hi, I have a clients gigabyte brix GB-BXi7-4770R He was using VMWARE On it and it wont boot. I tried and nothing works. I swapped ram and SSDS Nothing at all.

Are you able to access BIOS or it's just straight up dead like it doesn't turn on at all?

It's powered up like a laptop if I remember correctly, perhaps the power brick died on you? That happens sometimes.

What happens when you try to turn it on? You press the button, fan spins, it turns on then immediately off? Does it boot loop? Perhaps the button doesn't react at all like it's a button that does nothing?

 

If so, then the button could be damaged, capacitor on the motherboard inside can be blown I'd check if that's the case, CPU might be overheating and the system just turns off right away to avoid it's own destruction.

Nothing happens at all.. Could you help me research how to jump start the motherboard?

It's a BRIX mini PC, the motherboard is custom made. You could jump start normal motherboard by using screwdriver and connecting the two pins together where the button should be plugged in. If this motherboard has these two pins then use a screwdriver and touch them both with a screwdriver at once and system should in theory turn on. I do it to PCs that don't have a power on button.

Still nothing I can only get the light to turn on but no power.

There are few possibilities:

CPU might be dead.

There was a short and motherboard is fried therefore no repair possible, only replace.

The power brick isn't working properly.

 

Or these are the last possibilities, and if none work then I'm afraid that the BRIX is dead and RMA is needed.

Check that the PSU is switched to ‘1’ (on) and plugged into the wall.

 

Double-check that the outlet is good (or try another).

Check all power connections (PSU-side and board-side).

Reseat memory and VGA.

Reset / clear CMOS.

My Gigabyte BXi7 4770r just bricked on me after being left unplugged for a few hours. Same symptoms. I opened it up, no obvious indication of issues. I checked the voltage on the BIOS battery was at ~1.7V (much lower than the 3V spec). I unplugged the battery and this let lights turn on with power. Ordering a replacement battery now. My Gigabyte BXi7 4770r just bricked after a 12 hour power outage and I'm wondering if its the same thing. Although by battery seems to be showing a steady 3.25V.

 

Anyone else had one of these brick and brought it back to life?

 

I should also add that my Brix appears to be making a clicking sound. The PSU has 19V so not an external PSU issue.

So I have a brix 4770r and after many years being powered on and for most of them running win server and being vital to my network. Earlier this month I powered it off for rewiring (both power (ups) and in wall Ethernet), and it wouldn’t power back on(no lights no fan no signs of life at all).

 

after the initial panic attack I disassembled it looking for anything obvious (burnt circuits, bad caps, whatever) found nothing but I had removed the msata ssd, the ram, and the cmos battery in looking. When I put it back together it powered up fine other then needing to reset the bios settings.

 

powered off for a configuration maintenance thing 2 days ago and same issue where it appears completely DoA. This time I just tried reseating the ram and ssd to no effect but going back and pulling the cmos battery did the trick.

 

I don’t have a multimeter/voltmeter and short of cutting through the shrink plastic around the battery not sure how I would probe the voltage as a previous poster had done. Also curious to know where he ordered the replacement battery from as I find that more ideal then cutting off the plastic around the battery desoldering the wires re-soldering to a new battery and encasing it in new shrink tubing. (Soldering is a new skill I have just begun to try and I don’t want to botch something so vital to my setup)

I had the same thing the other day.

 

After some searching I found that the battery may be the problem, so I changed that. It did not help.

 

The did some more searching, and it was mentioned that maybe some part of the system holds some data for 24H, which may need to be flushed somehow. A suggestion was to leave the battery out for 24 hours to flush the data, as there is apparently no option to flush the data quickly.

 

So I did, and today I put it back together again. And to my surprise it works again.

 

It may be too late for others, and I know it is an older machine, but just to let others know. I read the info on the data retention on a forum where the thread was about Asus boards, so it may be beneficial to other machines well.

 

@tblomega, I made the battery myself as I live where there is no easy access to parts like that. I reused the cable and plug, and attached this with electrical tape to the battery.
