So i killed my aging haswell i5 4590k and Z97 Ranger Board. I'm running a 1300x with 8gb of ddr3( because I killed my other stick of ram )which a friend lent to me. I am looking to upgrade to a build that will accommodate my 1080 gpu. I am bit of a fence about another quad core though I know it will be cheaper e.g. 7600k . I thought about getting a i7700k or a ryzen 1700x with 16gb of DDR4 and a board that will overclock it. My cpu cooler is a Noctua DH14 so if I went ryzen I would have to buy the AM4 bracket. So any advice ? I would like a gigabyte or MSI board preferably

i5s are even more irrelevant now than Ryzen. Don't waste your time with them, either get Ryzen now or wait for Covfefe lake i3's which are basically i5's.

Get a ryzen 7 1700, with an X370 motherboard (ASrock taichi boards are quite reliable) with 16GB DDR4 RAM. The cooler does support the AM4 platform but you would need to purchase the AM4 brackets required for mounting the cooler. The AM4 platform with ryzen enables more upgradability in the future, its also less expensive then its intel counterparts and when it comes to gaming/other heavier workloads, ryzen will have the benefits of having more cores/threads. If you want a less expensive alternative, than get a ryzen 5 1600, with a B350 motherboard and 16GB DDR4 RAM.

Nonono coffee lake is a week and a half away. The press kit already got released. It's the mobile  cannon lake chips that are delayed until 2018.
