Hi Brains trust,

I am in the process of planning a new system and I have been looking at how much RAM to get.

The main uses for the system is photo and video editing using Photoshop and Premier Pro (and the occasional run of Civ V/VI or Deus Ex (HR and MD).
I recall seeing a one of Linus' videos were it seemed to indicate that there was little benefit of having more than 32GB of RAM for these programs.
Now the boards that I am looking at will support upto 64GB or 128GB of RAM and I was orignially planning on maxing out which ever board I got.
But since seeing the video I am thinking that 32 should be enough. Not long after I saw another video about a RAM disk and that got me thinking of if there would be any benefit to going the full 64 or 128GB of RAM, using 32 as RAM and then using the rest as the scratch disks for Photoshop and Premier.

So the quesions are;

Would running 32GB of RAM with a 32GB (or more) Scratch RAMDisk be of any benefit?

Would I be best just sticking with the 32GB since that seems to be the sweet spot for performance in the Adobe suite?
Or should I just max out the board and just leave it as RAM?

More than 16gb RAM is alot for games, for editing programs most usually 32GB is minimum, id get 64gb because its the middle of minimum and not too overpowered as 128gb. Id recommend 64gb to ensure good performance.

What program takes minimum 32gb ram?

OP: I'd just say that you should just get 16-32gb of 3000ish mhz ram and be future proof for a while. Ram disks and such don't make a big if any difference if you have an SSD.

Editing programs and designing programs need more Ram than other programs.

Yes but most stuff an average user uses don't need a minimum of 32gb, even stuff like CAD, video editing, coding....

id still like 64gb for the bigger files. He is not a average user, video editing is not that usual. Working with photos and videos takes on the RAM and id take 64 gb. Maybe he wants to upgrade editing program or works with more exhausting programs in the future. To be safe 64 gb will always work 16gb wont, 32gb with bigger files should still effect the program.

not that big of a deal but Id rather be 100% secure with a good performance than 50%

Software development, video editing, database work (even when the database is non-local), all eat memory. I have had machines with 32GB that I wished had more, I regularly fill 16GB both at home and at work (software development/database at work, software development/gaming/video editing/game development at home). My next home machine will have a minimum of 32GB with 64 if prices ever come down a bit. I truly regret not doing 32 in my current machine since prices were much cheaper when I built it - but I thought it would be cheap to upgrade in a few years HA silly me!
