Laptop Harddrive question

My friend wants me to wipe his old laptop hard drive because he forgot his password so he couldn't access the laptop. I have a couple of questions 

 

  • Does wiping it make it a clean drive (I know wiping a normal drive makes it 'Clean' but due to him forgetting his password does it make it so I cannot wipe it?
  • His windows 7 key isn't visible on his laptop (Sticker) When I reinstall windows would I need a new key?

1. No unless the drive itself is locked (I havent seen this function in consumer hard drives yet)

 

2. Most likely yes. Might as well get Windows 10 in this case as long as the laptop CPU supports the required instruction sets.

Did he use a local account or a microsoft account(Email at login) for his profile. If local, its simple to reset password with the installer disk without wiping the disk.

 

It was local, but now its been wiped
