I am planning on upgrading my HD 5850 because it is showing its age nowadays. I'm considering getting a GTX 780 Ti, but is the extra $130+ over the 780 really worth it? GTX 780 Ti 1440p performance is quite a bit more better, but is it really $130+ better. I am trying to get the most balls to the walls performance card mainly so i wouldnt have to upgrade for another coupe of years, so i guess i shouldnt be really asking this.

Just for reference, I am planning on going to 1440p sometime in the future, not sure when but i am planning on it. I am also planning on going G-Sync 1440p should they ever do it, but thats going to be a major hit on the wallet. Also considering getting the NVidia Shield as well.

Edit: Is there any word on a higher RAM GPU model as well?

Well it's your choice and you have summed it up yourself. Do you think you will be using 1440p before maxwell (Nvidia 800 series)? If yes than go with 780ti. If no than hold off or buy something cheaper like a 270x and get a maxwell card. TGhats just my opinion. But yes the performance increase in 1440p is well worth the price of admission.

balls to the walls?

go r9 290 crossfire.

2 r9 290s is about the same price as a single 780 TI

will perform better as well. also spend more and go full custom loop and overclock as high as possible

$130 more? Isn't it more like $200 more?

Where are you shopping/located?

Wait for EVGA classified then look into the 780TI.

Why are you comparing the highest priced cards??? They're the same gpus...

You don't go and look at the most expensive hdmi cables...

Where are you located then?

I'd rather not buy a cheaper card now and only upgrade it relatively later. I never really believed in getting a component you're going to upgrade relatively shorty later only because you end up waiting and waiting. I want something that definitely going to last a very very long time. Thats good to hear that the extra cash is worth it.

If i wanted to go Multi-GPU i would've stated it. There is a reason why i asked about the 780 Ti and i pretty much listed them on there. G-Sync, NVidia Shield, and Single GPU.. Yes the R9 290 XFire will perform better, but only if the games do support XFire and scale well. Cheaper than a Single GTX 780 Ti? A Ti cost $700 a single R9 290 is $400, so getting two of them is going to be more expensive AND i still have to get a new PSU to accommodate the XFire (I have my specs in my sig) so no, its going be be about a good $200+ more expensive.

Oh woops yeah you're right. I was looking at the wrong cards. I wasnt doing reference vs reference my bad.

Wait for EVGA classified then look into the 780TI.

Not a huge fan of EVGA, but im waiting for all of them to come out.

the price difference is up to 300 if not more but also as small as 22 dollars

didnt state that you wanted to stay "single gpu"

i was giving you an option for balls to the walls. and actually, 780ti is 1250-1300 for me in my country while i can get a r9 290 for 600-650.

Nothing lasts a very long time without getting outdated when it comes to computer parts.

You could just go single 290 if you didn't need Shield. You should probably just go with a 780 though. The 780 Ti is a bad value.

Oh i see, forgot to check to see if you were located in the US. For me it isnt cheaper. I thought stating that i wanted a 780/780Ti would've been the red flag for wanting only a single GPU. Its a bit obvious that balls to the walls would mean going XFire/SLI, so there would be a reason why i chose a single card.

I agree with outdated. Computer parts release pretty quickly, but I'm talking longevity in terms of justifying an upgrade. My HD 5850 only started to really show its age in this year with the games that came out. I've had it for a very long time, like 4+ years or something now so im looking for a new card though would last the same length if not more. Leaning towards Nvidia because if it does seem to age i can always get a G-Sync monitor which would make last even longer.

Going high end isn't the the best way to make you money last the longest. You get more for your money by getting what you need for now for less and upgrading as you need to.

So considering im probably going 1080p for next couple of years since im a college student, you think the GTX 780 would be okay? I know the GTX 770 is perfect for 1080p, but im trying to avoid as much dips as i can while spending a fairly reasonable price.

The 770 or 780 are both good choices

Im gonna get the GTX 780 either tonight or tomorrow. Newegg right now has that 3 games limited offer on their cards, does that apply also to retailers like frys?

Edit: just checked NVidias webpage and its only online retailers as far as i can tell.
