Hi party people,

i am running an old Dell mini desktop PC with an core i3 and 8gb of ram as a small server for games in my living room.

at the moment i have mine craft setup and also have space engineers and CS GO ready to run if i want them to.

what i am searching for is some kind of management software that allows me to easily install vanilla gameservers which i can then mod as i want if needed and also allows me to start and stop them on demand.

i have seen some option when i googled around but most of them are only running on linux but i really want to run windows 10 as i am not familiar with linux and also space engineers didn't have a linux server last time i checked.

does anyone have suggestions what to use for this purpose?

Personally I like Linux more as it has lower overhead compare to window 10, you might want to try window server for a bit better performances. Another option is have docker which has tones of pre-configured VM essentially.

I currently using FreeNAS which has minecraft plugins which seem relative easy to setup but not sure about other games servers but presume you are able to run it BSD you can run it a FreeNAS jail or you could use a VM for space engineers.

I found FreeNAS the most stable for me, i haven't touch my freenas for well over a year now. I haven't had major issues which require a full reinstall. It just works for me, so i haven't brother changing or going with another OS.

From what i have test years back it pretty easy to mode and have multiple servers running.

This is just some suggestions.

for minecraft i REALLY recommend going linux, for several reasons:

- a metric buttload of free management applications

- once you get the hang of bash, it's pretty easy to make your own "management environment"

- java performance on linux is actually better, surprirsingly

- less resource usage by the OS, essentially raising the capabilities of your device.

as for CS:GO, toss that along on the linux side of things.

space engineers, unfortunately, requires windows on your server, so you'll have to either VM the before mentioned crap (which actually still makes the linux java performance thing give you a boost, believe it or not) and run space egineers on windows on bare metal, or the other way around.

personally, i've yet to find a good way of managing game servers on windows, i usually run everything i can on linux via the necessary bash scripts, and the windows stuff just lives in a VM i access with remote desktop.

maybe i should consider running no OS on the machine itself and just going straight to VM´s from the get go.

Not sure if that dual core i3 will hold up to this but i guess ill give it a try.
