Hey guys its been a while since I built a computer (2012) and its time for me to upgrade due to a few things. Right now I'm running an 8350 (that is broke) with a 970 chipset and an 8800 GTX. The CPU's memory management is broke so multitasking basically doesnt exist at all. In fact, Mozilla firefox completely stops with more than three tabs open. Im running a 1440x900 monitor from who knows when and Id like to be able to upgrade to at least 1920x1080. I'm not necessarily worried about 144hz but it wouldnt be bad. I'll be buying pieces one at a time so I'm planning on a bit of a larger budget, 1 to 1.5g as an overtime build probably for budget. The primary thing I do with this is web surfing with gaming and the main things I play game wise are Skyrim, Dungeon Defenders, Emulators, and the such, I'm also going to be running Virtual Machines quite often since I'm going to school for SysAdmin. Right now my system barely plays Skyrim on low settings at 60fps and Id like to be able to get to the high/ultra range preferably. It has no capability of playing SE whatsoever and only plays at 15 frames and Id love to be able to play that. I'd like to be able to build an RGB rig but I already have a razer green mouse and keyboard so I will upgrade those later down the line.

I'm not sure whether its a better idea to go with Ryzen 5 or an older generation i5. I have a 3000k series laying around from when my computer blew up but I don't know if it works anymore. I've never overclocked before but would like to dip my feet into it.

Case wise I'm looking for either partial tower or full tower unless there is an mATX that will hold a few drives. My fiancee has a Thermaltake V21 that doesn't seem that bad but I don't like the look of it. My current case is a cheap all see through 20 dollar thing that definitely needs replacing.

tl;dr

Budget is 1 - 1.5. Going to build overtime so it can expand a little bit for better performance.

Don't need peripherals.

I need a case (black and either mATX, or Tower with decent cooling and window, decent amounts of storage)

I've never watercooled before and would like to try doing that as well so if anyone has case suggestions that can, that would be great. Looking at X2....?

all components (I'd like to upgrade to SSDs for my Virtual Machines and games+OS. around 2TB's should be enough.)

Monitor (Ive never shopped for a monitor and don't know much about them)

I'm going to try to do a build on pcpartpicker but like I said above I'm not really sure which generation/company I should go with.

go ryzen, AMD has committed to AM4 until 2020 at least, better to have an upgrade path than buy an already dead architecture, especially when you don't even know if the cpu you have works

That's what I was thinking but I wasn't sure if price/performance wise still beats out Intel compared to earlier CPUs.

Possibly looking at the X2 or X5 case wise. I know I'm wanting something that can go either watercooled or pretty good air cooling if I decide not to water cool and my fiancee's V21 I think it is works great for air cooling. I'd like to be able to sync the RGB capabilities which means I'm limited to ATX for things like Asus's system and such correct or is that available on mATX boards?

Is the 7 going to be that much better compared to the 5 for what I'm doing? I'm assuming its because of the Virtual Machine aspect right?

No matter if you're running a virtual machine, not buying a 1700 on a $1500 budget is a waste.

No need to go mATX unless you have limited space to put the desktop.  I don't know much about the RGB but I do know that it's easier and sometimes better to go for a bulky aio like be quiet! or noctua because of price/performance
