I have had no end of problems with what i assume are graphics card issues, i bought a windforce OC R9 290 (non-x) 3 years ago when i first built my computer and after roughly a year and a half i sent it to be RMA'd because of massive artifacting while hot (basically from a cold start i would get 5 minutes before it would start playing up and when hot i wouldn't be able to reach the windows logon screen). Gigabyte apparently found nothing wrong with the card but they offered me a replacement for the cost of shipping and offered me a 2 month warranty (the card they sent back was actually a 290x so i didn't mind the extra price). But now the card has started to play up as well, ranging from flickers every couple of seconds (video below) to full lock ups that require a restart. the problem is very intermittent and inconsistent. Sometimes i am able to play AAA titles for 4 hours and not get anything but other times i can just have word and a couple of chrome tabs open and go into full meltdown.

Has anyone experienced anything like this, is this a GC problem or should i be looking elsewhere?

also I am using Radeon Software Version: 17.7.2

Have you tried to DDU & Reinstall?

If you don't know what this is, DDU stands for Display Driver Uninstaller, and is the ubiquitous way to uninstall GPU drivers. Most GPU problems are fixed with an uninstall and reinstall of their respective drivers.

You can download DDU here: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html , and I’d recommend using the “Clean and Restart” option.

Once this is done, you can download new drivers by clicking on the links below, and selecting your hardware.

Nvidia: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx

AMD: http://support.amd.com/en-us/download

Sorry if this is too much detail. This is a macro on my keyboard and I’m trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator

I have tried this previously and sometimes it does work for a few weeks and then it will start messing up again other times it does nothing at all. Either way i have tried a full clean install again and i will see if i can get it to still freak out. I was also wondering if this could be anything other than a GC issue, it just seems strange that 2 different cards have had much the same problems in the same system, i have tried the card in a different computer (a low end i3 dell) but because the problem ranges in frequency it's hard to say if it worked properly in that computer as well.

Give the card a bit more voltage and see if it goes away (more power limit, more voltage, no OC)

I still experienced a crash of my game after reinstalling all of the drivers (video: https://vimeo.com/233620669 WARNING it is Saints Row 3 so there is violence and i'm not too sure on this forums policies)

But this crash came after roughly 3 hours of playing the same game however there was a lot of stuff happening on the screen when it started but the actual crash happened about 2 minutes after all the action.

I will try to increase the voltage and see if that helps, any suggestions on how much more to add?

EDIT: I increased the core voltage by 15mV and the power limit by 10% (is this too much or too little?) and it BSOD'd basically at the main menu of Saints Row. After restarting however i checked the settings and they had been reset to 13mV and 0% so i re adjusted them to my numbers and the same thing happened.

UPDATE: so after raising and lowering the core voltage a whole bunch with no change i decided to return to standard settings but it failed just as quickly as ever. I needed to get some work done so i just plugged my monitor into the on-board graphics output (with the card still in the system just not using its outputs) but after a while, while watching a youtube video it completely locked up and showing what looked like old school tv static (Video:

Any guesses from here?

UPDATE UPDATE:

I completely removed the graphics card from the system and sure as anything the static came again. i ran a stress test on the CPU and it seemed fine but the problem usually doesn't occur under load so this means basically nothing. All that i can think of is either RAM, CPU or power supply, (i'm in an old college building with 71 other people using aircons and the jankiest power system imaginable) so i will try a surge protector to see if that fixes anything
