New PC

so i recently built a rig (first one) with and i7 7700k gtx 1080 and i am having a lot of trouble running games. I am worried that for some reason my pc is trying to use onboard graphics any suggestions.

 

By bad I mean 8 fps in gta V

is your monitor plugged into the GPU or the motherboard? Should be in the GPU

Try what?  Plugging it in properly?

It's not a "try it" sort of thing, just, is that how it is or not?

do you have the nvidia drivers installed?  Windows will try to install its own, but idk how good those are

yeah the Nvidia drivers are all up to date

What settings are you trying to play at?

Do you know what typical performance you should be able to get with that card?  I'm not familiar myself, but I do know some settings are particularly demanding and afaik it's still not really doable to max everything.

I should be getting in the 50-60 range on average 

 

another thing is when i have nzxt cam open whild doing it it says the gpu never goes more than 10% load

yeah still no difference

So i turned MSAA on to x8 and now it is running at 70 fps. 

I honestly have no idea what that is but it works.

Well, what was it set to before? 32x?  /s

It's worth noting that GTA is a strange, broken piece of software.  Back when I had my GTX 660, I had it setup in a way it could always maintain 60 fps, but then one day the game was updated and it could only get mid to high 50s, so I tried readjusting it but no help, and I turned it down more and more to the point that it should have easily doubled the fps but still no change at all, so I realized it must be some sort of bug rather than an actual load issue, and I used GeForce experience to reset it to "recommended settings", and then manually changed it back to the way it was, and suddenly it worked perfectly again.

I play it at 800p almost rock-bottom settings at cinematic to 30 fps.

y tho, you could just throw any GPU in that rig and be good to go!  Like, it literally looks like a complete gaming PC minus the GPU...

high school student problems... 

 

when I built the PC in middle school (all stuff from MicroCenter) my dad said we can come back and get the GPU in a few weeks....

rip that plan, he wants me to focus on SATs now ): 

gotta wait till college for a legit gaming rig. might take this one and add a GPU, not sure yet.
