Audio connector questions

So when I hook up my iPhone to my speakers via 3.5mm vs. playing through my tv connected via optical - the TV source sounds noticeably better. Is this a result of the type of connection? Or the output from my TV is higher quality than my iPhone? Just curious, not really an issue or anything :)

Optical will be better quality because it's a digital signal so the quality does not degrade in the wire.

Also you're using the DAC of the speakers for the TV rather than with the iphone which uses its own DAC of likely worse quality.
