So im off to Uni in September and my student loan is quite generous, After my first rent payment ill have £1405.90 left. As well as this im also getting a job so living costs will probably be paid by that so im looking at this as money i can spend. So my dad knows a guy and he's sorted me with a Macbook Pro and a 500GB Samsung 850 Evo for around £500. The macbook is for uni work. So he knows about my hobby for computers and has came to me with a GeForce GTX 1070 for around £300-£350, however he knows my specs and knows that my Fx 6300 also could do with a new life so my question is do you think i should look into upgrading my PC, Ive listed my current specs below.

Ive been looking at i5's anyway and he also mentioned an i7 which he would do me a decent price for and im just thinking i dont want to go overkill because there is other expenses i need to consider, clothes etc Any help ? Ive listed my specs below.

Also ATM im not a huge PC gamer however i intend to play alot more and feel that i would also like to have a machine capable of facilitating my uni work as well (computer forensics)

  • Motherboard

Over the i5 6600k ?

Given that the 6600K is last-gen, yes. Maybe drop down to an i5-7600K at least

For just gaming an i5 would have been fine, you dont need an i7. And TBH it doesnt matter all that much between a 6600k and a 7600k. Get whichever one is easier to get and cheaper (though with that said if they are a few pounds apart get the 7600k for sure)

As for everything else... something along these line :3? Since you are going with 2nd hand parts too alot of these price should go down, but I have no idea what u can get for how much so this is just some suggestion base on your budget

I will also tell you this: these are probably way too overkill for whatever you want to do, and you probably need mouse, keyboard, monitor and speaker/headphone too, so you could drop the 1080Ti for a 1070 or smt, get a cheaper case and Ram. You shouldnt buy HDD and PSU secondhand, but everything else should be fine

Sorry was meant to say that its only really the mobo cpu and gpu i was looking in to replacing but thanks with the advice on the cpu. It depends on how much the i7 is tbh as i know he will do me a deal and all of these parts are also brand new in the packaging

If so... an i5 unlocked like a 7600k, a Z270 board with enough SATA port for all your HDD (if you are someone like me who use 4 drives in total), a PSU that have enough cable for all that and probably a 1070 would be best for you. Save all your money toward something else like VR and/or a few good monitor, or just save it for the eventually upgrade to a GTX 1270 or whatever name they will come up next :P
