Second display Problems

Sorry for the long, drawn out and confusing question but here it is,

 

Hello all, I built my first rig about two months ago and have one nice monitor I have been using for gaming. But I wanted a second monitor just to keep misc. stuff on when gaming or doing work. I found an old dell monitor in my attic with a VGA connector. I also had an adapter from VGA to what looks like DVI-A minus the bottom right most pin. I also had a dvi to hdmi adapter which my computer GPU acually has a slot for. I know the monitor and the first adapter work cause i hooked it up to and older pc and it worked fine. but when i attach the dvi to hdmi adapter and hook it up to my pc the computer registers it and I can my my mouse over it, but no image acually shows up. 

 

Is there something I'm doing wrong or should i really just invest in a VGA to Hdmi adapter.

modern gpu's do not output analog signals via dvi anymore

It is also not possible to create a chain of adapters from HDMI → DVI → VGA. Passive DVI to VGA adapters do not work in all DVI ports. They only work in special DVI + VGA combo ports called DVI-I. HDMI only supports passive adapters to DVI-D, not to DVI-I.
