Computer requires multiple attempts to boot

Go to solution Solved by Septimus,

If you happen to have another power supply unit you could test it with, I would try that.

This is quite a stretch, but I'm banking on the issue being the external power, try plugging it into an outlet that is closer to your breaker or just another one in your house. I doubt you'll see any difference, but if you don't have any other options...

Hi guys,

I am experiencing an issue when I boot my computer it takes multiple attempts before it fully starts up. All the fans, hard drives and LEDs light up but it shuts right off after about 1-2 seconds. It repeats this anywhere between 1-5 times before it boots.

When it boots it it works perfectly fine, I've run a stress test for ~1 hour with intel XTU and no issues.

CPU temps run @ 26 degrees c idle and 66 degrees c under load (from XTU stress test)

The motherboard has 2 EPS 8pin plugs on the top of the motherboard, my PSU only has 1.

Through all the research so far, most people are saying the second is not required.

I am using:

CPU: i7 7700k

MB: Asus ROG Maximus ix Apex (Bios 1010, just updated)

RAM: 2x 8gb Mushkin blackline ram

GPU: Gigabyte radeon r9 290

Antec high current gamer 750w

Asus PCE-Ac68 PCIE wifi card

PSU and GPU are from my previous build, PSU is about 5 years old and GPU is about 3 years old, the only new components are the ram, mb and cpu.

I've tried updating the bios, clearing cmos, booting with nothing plugged in except the essentials (ssd, keyboard, mouse and monitor).

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just an update, I tired using the onboard GPU, 1 stick of RAM and remove the ASUS wifi card, removed the GPU.

Its a bit more stable. Takes 0-1 attempts to boot up vs the 1-5 before, but issue still happening pretty consistently.

@Septimus I was thinking it might have been related to the second EPS plug not being plugged in originally until pretty much 100% of people I've seen/asked and found online said it wasn't required.

I don't know if it matters but this is the same PSU I used before upgrading.

I was running

i7 2600k

Asus P8P67 deluxe mb

2x 4gb corsair vengeance ram.

rest of the components were identical and I had no issues, and was running fine before I took apart that computer and rebuilt with new parts.

@WereCat what do you mean by training RAM?

Unfortunately I don't have anywhere else I can plug this computer into, I moved it to another outlet in the same room and I had no issues.

Also if it was power related I would assume it would affect my previous computer, but that worked perfectly fine.

I would also make sure that all of your wires are fairly neat. I could speculate that there may be a point on the motherboard making contact with something it shouldn't, and that could be causing problems.

I checked the wiring to make sure nothing is loose/hanging or touching the mb.

Also new update, I plugged the second stick of RAM and Asus PCE-ac68 wifi card back in, and its back to happening 3-4 times per boot before it boots.

still using onboard GPU with GPU taken out.

Have you tried it with just the second stick of RAM? Have you gotten everything configured in the BIOS?

So you have issues on one outlet but not the other?

Sorry, I meant had same issues.

I have not tried with just the second stick of RAM, I'm going to try that and check the slots.

Aside from updating the bios I didn't touch anything in the bios settings. I'm not really sure what to check in there.

I will probably get a new PSU tomorrow if I can find the one I want on sale. we'll see how that goes.

---

I just ordered a Corsair RMx 850 PSU, but will be shipping to store. So when that arrives I'll try again.

Okay, keep me posted, I'm interested to see how this goes. Be sure to enable the XMP profile in your BIOS for your RAM.

Will do, store didn't have the PSU I wanted (Corsair RMx 850) so I will post when I have it, I ordered it online for instore pick up and got email saying it will be instock October 25, so I'll be shopping around.

So far issue seems pretty intermittent making me think it is something power related.

Yesterday I had no issues. But when I posted this thread it took anywhere between 1-5 attempts to boot when I restarted.

Today it is happening anywhere between 1-5 times before it boots.

If anyone has any suggestions for a similar or better PSU for ~150+tax in Canada I'll go pick it up right away lol.

So I replaced the power supply today, and issue did not occur since replacing it.

Hopefully issue will not come back but I will monitor it for now.

Turns out my initial guess was correct. Best of luck to you with your PC!

i7-2600

8 gigs of ddr3 1333

rx580 8 gig

I need help too, for this thing takes 12-16 tries to turn on (I'm srs)

Edit: Bad power header, bad MOBO. fixed

It is but human, to err, to buy a PSU, akin to dirt,

but fret not, young Padawan, for we will tell you,

what will become, of that, which you have earned
