Singl/Dual/Quad Channel RAM

It seems to be fairly agreed upon from what I've read that quad channel won't do an awful lot for gamers, but is the leap from a single DIMM to a dual channel kit significant? Currently running a single 4GB stick in a new rig I have a set upgrade path for, and wondered how much extra performance I can expect from upgrading to dual channel (other than the obvious benefit of higher capacity)
