Fan only spins during bootup, stops once OS is loaded; barely kicks in when overheating.

I see, thank you; It's likely there is dust build up in there, given how old it is. And, good idea; it didn't even cross my mind to check the thermal compound. I'll look into taking my laptop to a proper shop around where I live so I don't botch the job and do more harm than good; I'll keep in mind to ask them to check it.
