Hey there guys just something i've been trying to figure out for a while now but haven't found any solid answers from my extensive googling...

So I'm planning on building a PC with an SSD as the boot drive where Windows and programs/games will be installed on, while a raid 10 array will act as my secondary storage. (I will be using GPT on both if its relevant)

Now i'm pretty sure i need to have all drives plugged in, the sata ports all set to raid (i'll be using an Asus Maximus VI Hero motherboard) so that i can firstly raid 10 the 4x 2TB drives i'll be putting in. After that i'm not sure what to do, i'm thinking i'd unplug the drives related to the raid array and install windows on the SSD then plug the raid back in afterwards.

But i'm wondering...don't i need to install the Intel RST drivers before i install Windows 8.1? Or can i install them afterwards and have the OS recognise the raid array as "unallocated space" for me to format how i wish after i've installed windows and plugged the raid array back in?

I'm also wondering if it would be a good idea (if possible) to install the Intel RST drivers just before selecting the SSD to install on (remembering the raid array at this point is not plugged in)?

Thanks for the help in advance:)

  • 3 weeks later...

Sorry for necro'ing this thread, i forgot about if for a while and i still don't have a clear enough answer. So rather than just recreating a new thread with the exact same question i'll just be "bumping" this in hopes for more opinions/answers.

You install the drivers afterwards.

Everything else you've said sounds fine.
