Hey guys,

So this is my current machine that I've had for over 5 years.  I don't game very often but I usually play the big RPG titles and play the campaign and that's about it.  I got Doom earlier this year and actually could not play it even on medium settings for some reason.  This is what I'm rocking - hail to the classics

CPU - i7 920 @ 3.8Ghz

GPU - Sapphire Radeon 6950 2GB

Memory - 12GB DDR3 @ 1333 Mhz

Hard Drive - 2 x WD Black in RAID0

Hard Drive 2 x WD Green in RAID1

I play on my Samsung 1080p TV so not 4K, yet although I do plan on replacing my TV later this year to a 4K TV.

Issue I have is yea I can go and build a brand spanking new machine with Kaby Lake, a 1080Ti etc but I'm just wondering if you guys think there are any easy/quick bandaids I could do to my current system.  The problem is for example if I wanted an NVME SSD, I would need to get a mobo with UEFI which would then require a rebuild.

What would happen if I decided to throw in a 1080 into this machine with no other changes?

Any thoughts on adding some bandaid fixes to this machine or should I just suck it up and build a new one?

Thanks!

the i7 will likely bottleneck the gtx 1080, but you'll still get a great performance increase. just upgrade the cpu+mobo+ram in the future when you have the budget. no need for an NVME ssd, a sata ssd like a hynix sl308, mydigitalssd BP5e or samsung 850 evo will be just as good.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Yea that's what I figured.  Part of it isn't necessarily about the money. It's just about having to build a whole new box.  There are some programs that I won't be able to transfer over to the new machine.  Wish I could transfer the boot drive as well just so I can dual boot to the old programs but I doubt you can do that with a new mobo/cpu combo.  Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, that processor is way too old to handle GTX 10 series cards. Try and go for at least haswell.

The good old 920 finally loses it's muster.  If I do upgrade the whole thing I'll probably end up getting Skylake or Kabylake but yea I guess I do need to do a full system upgrade

  • 2 weeks later...

Just opened my computer off to see if I had any 8 pin PCIE power connectors. None, just two 6 pins. So definitely no way to at least get a 1080 in there I guess unless I tried to get a couple molex to pcie adaptors

ill just have to sit down and pick some new parts for a total new build. Although I might just wait until Black Friday and/or CL to come out
